How to read a funding rate.

01

Positive — longs pay shorts

A perp trading above spot pushes funding positive, and everyone long pays everyone short at the next settlement — typically every 8 hours. A stubbornly high rate means the long side is crowded, and paying for it.

02

Negative — shorts pay longs

Below spot, the sign flips: shorts pay longs to stay in the trade. Deeply negative funding marks a crowded short side — the raw material of a short squeeze.

The spread between venues

The same perpetual rarely funds at the same rate everywhere. With eight venues on one board, the gap is visible at a glance — and a funding spread alert can watch it for you.

This page is the overview tool; funding rate alerts are its standing-order counterpart. Four conditions cover the ways funding matters, each with a per-alert cooldown so a choppy rate doesn't ping you all night — delivered to email, Telegram, Discord, or a webhook.

  • 01Threshold the rate crosses a level you set — above +0.05%, below -0.01%, anywhere.
  • 02Flip funding crosses zero and changes sign, positive to negative or back.
  • 03Spike the rate jumps sharply between settlements, whatever the absolute level.
  • 04Cross-exchange spread the gap between two venues' rates for the same perp widens past your line.

Funding rates — common questions

What is a crypto funding rate?
A periodic payment between long and short traders that keeps a perpetual future's price tied to spot. When funding is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. Most venues settle every 8 hours, some every 4 or 1.
Which exchanges does CoinBeacon show funding rates for?
Eight futures venues: Binance, BingX, Bitget, BitMEX, Bybit, Gate.io, HTX, and KuCoin. The board covers USDT perpetuals on each and refreshes every 30 seconds, so you can compare venues without holding an account on any of them.
Can I get an alert when a funding rate moves?
Yes. Funding rate alerts fire on a threshold you set, a sign flip, a sudden spike, or a cross-exchange spread — delivered by email, Telegram, Discord, or webhook. The free plan includes 10 active alerts with every feature.
