How to read a narrative row

Average
Every member coin counts once, whatever its size, so the average describes the sector's typical coin rather than its biggest one. That also makes it fragile: in a six-coin sector, one coin up 47 percent can print a +5 percent average while four of the six are red.
- 02
Median
The middle coin's move. When the median sits close to the average, the sector moved together. When the average is far above it, one coin is doing the work.
- 03
Breadth
The up-versus-down split. Twenty green out of sixty-five is a sector where a few coins ran; fifty out of sixty-five is broad participation.

Coins and top mover
Coin count shows whether you are reading a broad category or a handful of names. The top mover names the coin pulling the average up.

The coin ran, the sector did not
A ticker on every gainers list, sitting inside a sector with two coins green out of eleven, is an isolated move, such as news, a listing or a squeeze. It says nothing about the rest of the group. Cross-check it on the movers board.
The sector ran, your coin has not yet
A sector with broad participation and a coin inside it still flat is a laggard. The app board expands every row to its member coins.
Confirm it with what is happening this minute
A 24-hour sector figure is a summary. Whether the move is still pushing right now is a different question, answered by the live pump and dump feed and its continuation-versus-exhaustion read.
Then check the market it is happening in
A green sector in a market where funding is stretched and liquidations are cascading is different from the same sector in a quiet market. The market overview puts movers, volume, funding and liquidations on one screen.
How these sectors are built
Grouped from CoinMarketCap tags
Each coin carries category tags. A sector here is one of those tags, or a few near-identical ones under one name, filtered through a curated allowlist with clean labels. Broad ecosystem tags are left out on purpose: they describe which chain a token lives on, not what it does.
Three coins minimum
A sector needs at least three coins with a 24-hour value before it can rank. Anything thinner would top or bottom the board on one coin's move.
Equal-weighted, on purpose
Members are not weighted by market cap, so a sector's number is not simply its largest coin restated. That is why the median and the up/down split are printed next to it.
The tradable slice
The universe is coins with a market on Binance spot or futures or the Bybit, OKX, Gate.io or HTX perpetuals, matched to their CoinMarketCap entry, so each sector is the part of the category you can actually trade. A coin with several tags appears in several sectors.
A sector tells you where to look. An alert tells you when.
Once a narrative has your attention, the follow-up is one coin and one condition. Arm a percentage alert on the names leading it and hear about the next leg inside the window you choose, or a market cap alert to catch a coin crossing a cap value or climbing into the top ranks as its sector gets bid. - What is a crypto narrative?
- A narrative is a group of coins the market trades as one story, such as memecoins, AI, real world assets, layer 2s or DePIN. Money often moves into a group rather than one coin at a time, so the sector view shows where it is going.
- Which crypto sector is pumping right now?
- The board above answers that live: sectors are ranked by the average 24-hour move of their member coins, strongest first. Read the breadth column beside it. A sector at the top of the list with only two of its six coins green reflects one coin's move rather than the whole sector.
- What is sector rotation in crypto?
- Rotation is capital leaving one group of coins and showing up in another, for example out of layer 1s and into memecoins. On this board it looks like one sector's average and breadth climbing while another's slide. Checking the ranking on consecutive days shows it over time.
- Where do these crypto sectors come from?
- Each coin carries category tags from CoinMarketCap. A sector here is one of those tags, restricted to a curated allowlist with clean display labels; where CoinMarketCap ships near-identical tags, such as two for DEX tokens, they form one sector. It needs at least three coins with a 24-hour value before it can rank. Broad ecosystem tags are deliberately excluded: they say where a coin lives, not what it does. One coin can sit in several sectors, so a DEX token also counts inside DeFi.
- Why does breadth matter more than the sector average?
- The average is an equal-weighted mean of every member coin, so in a small sector one coin up 47 percent can lift the whole row while most of its members are red. The median and the up/down counts are the check: when the average sits far above the median, a single coin is doing the work, which differs from a sector where three quarters of the coins are green.
- Which coins are included in each sector?
- The universe is the several hundred coins that trade on at least one of the markets CoinBeacon reads candles from (Binance spot and futures, and the Bybit, OKX, Gate.io and HTX perpetuals) and have a matching CoinMarketCap entry. A sector here is therefore the tradable slice of the category, not every token that has ever claimed the label. Coins without a 24-hour figure are skipped, since a board ranked by 24-hour move cannot rank them.
- How often does the narratives board update?
- Market cap and category data move slowly, so the underlying snapshot refreshes roughly hourly rather than tick by tick. The data-age reading in the header shows how current it is. For minute-level moves, the pump and dump feed and the movers boards are the right surfaces.
- Can I get an alert when a narrative starts moving?
- There is no sector-level alert type. What works is arming alerts on the coins leading a sector you are watching: a percentage alert fires when a coin moves by the amount you pick inside a time window, and a market cap alert fires on a cap value or a top-N rank change.
